Diagnostic Pathology: Cytopathology, 2nd Edition download pdf

The "key facts" provide quick criteria needed for diagnosis or adequacy evaluation at the time of procedure, whereas the rest of the chapter is written in a consistent, succinct, synoptic format, which is an easy read and full of information.

The book covers all aspects of cytology, from gyn to non-gyn exfoliative and fine-needle aspiration, including neuropathology squash preparations, ophthalmic cytopathology, quality improvement, instrumentation, immunohistochemistry, and molecular testing as they apply to cytology, cell blocks and miniscule biopsy specimens.

In recognition of their rapid expansion, there are new chapters on recent technological developments and on the cytodiagnosis of childhood tumours. A special section on the importance of multidisciplinary team meetings that include the cytopathologist as a core member of the team has also been included at the end of each chapter.

As active members of this team, cytopathologists can define their role in the management pathway and thus bring the patient and the microscope together as never before. The full text can be accessed online and images downloaded via Expert Consult.

It encompasses exfoliative and aspiration cytology of all major nongynecologic body sites. Each chapter opens with an algorithm that presents the reader with the relevant microscopic findings, the most important additional findings, and the differential diagnostic possibilities and problems in a clear and easily remembered form. Another important feature is the wealth of high-quality color photomicrographs, which clearly document the visual appearances of the most important lesions and highlight the differential diagnostic difficulties.

The accompanying text contains helpful general remarks and presents further relevant information on diagnostics, differential diagnostic procedures, and auxiliary methods. Besides established cytologists and pathologists, cytopathologists in training and cytotechnologists will find this book to be a valuable aid. The book provides a detailed description of the surgical pathology of thyroid diseases side by side with major advances in immunohistochemistry and molecular genetics that can be used in evaluating thyroid tumors and non-neoplastic diseases.

Part of the popular Pattern Recognition Series, this volume is designed to successfully guide you from identification of the dominant cytopathologic pattern, through the appropriate work-up, around the pitfalls, to the best diagnosis. A practical, pattern-based organization helps you to efficiently and confidently formulate accurate diagnoses at the microscope. A unique Visual Index at the beginning of the book allows you to compare specimens to commonly seen patterns, categorize them accordingly, and turn directly to in-depth diagnostic guidance.

Furthermore, additional images are also available online. I would have preferred to illustrate the histopathologic changes for every diagnostic category in this atlas. However, it was not a practical option. In keeping with the current trends in the practice of cytopathology and their utilization by our clinical colleagues, the discipline of gynecologic cytopathology deserves special note for the considerable changes it has undergone over the years: liquid-based cytology collection methods and interpretation, human papilloma virus HPV detection, evolving guidelines for cervical cancer screening, and forms of automation in screening gynecologic specimens to name a few.

Also, liquid-based cytopathology is fast becoming a popular processing technique in nongynecologic as well as aspiration cytopathology. November 22, Share on Facebook Share on Twitter. This comprehensive textbook is written with the idea of offering a practical and easy-to-access format. The different topics highlight the essential criteria needed for diagnosis or adequate evaluation from a cytological perspective.

The goal is to offer quick, up-to-date information on cytopathology so that it either helps the cytopathologists to arrive at the correct diagnosis or refresh their memory about the diagnostic features. The book covers all the aspect of cytology from gynecologic, to non-gynecologic and FNAC offering the most recent approaches and relevant information for each of the entities in the different sections. The authors described in details the morphological and cellular features which are the crucial mainstay for a correct diagnosis.

For instance, the authors covered the most recent classification systems such as the Bethesda reporting terminology for gynecologic cytology and updates on HPV testings and management outlines; updates on the Milan System for reporting salivary gland cytology with risk stratification; the Paris System for reporting urinary cytology; and updates on the Bethesda reporting system for thyroid cytology.

These evaluations show the combination of morphology with the risk of malignancy ROM and the clinical management strategies. Furthermore, what I really appreciate is the evaluation of the possible differential diagnoses which are detailed and evaluated with the essential morphological features and the combination of ancillary techniques. The textbook analyzes and discusses the state-of-art for the immunocytochemistry and molecular markers in the different entities as well as current information on lab operations, quality improvement, and risk reduction.

References are well selected and associated with the different and specific topics and subjects so that there is a direct correspondence to the literature.

An abundance of high-quality images offers an invaluable diagnostic aid for every cytopathologist, resident, and fellow who starts and works on cytology.

Of course textbooks are tool that might help in the daily practice, but in several cases cytopathology is less simple than what is in textbooks. Nonetheless, I think that for all practitioners confronted daily with cytopathology, this textbook is a great tool summarizing the important features of cytology and the complexity of it. Cytology really represents, in good hands, the way to do more and more with less and less.
